KNICKS' LAMPE SHINES

July 28, 2003 -- While the Knicks traded their most popular player last week in Latrell Sprewell, arguably their second-most popular player, Maciej Lampe, tore it up at the summer league in Salt Lake City at the Rocky Mountain Revue.
The 18-year-old Lampe was named this weekend to the First-Team All Revue after averaging 17.2 points and 7.0 rebounds in the five games. He shot 45 percent from 3-point range (9 of 20), finding the long-range touch that deserted him in Boston.
With center Elden Campbell now signed with Detroit, it's looking as if the Knicks won't be spending all of their $4.9 million exception and can use part of it to sign Lampe so he can afford to pay his contract buyout which is being negotiated down from $2 million.
The Knicks are trying to turn the 7-foot Pole into a center, but he did most of his damage from the perimeter. His steady improvement over the two-week summer league has given the Knicks reason to think he can play some minutes this season once his contract buyout is completed.
