THORN STILL AWAITING KNICK CALL
By MARC BERMAN
July 20, 2003 -- BOSTON - Since Rod Thorn's club obtained a fourth center in Alonzo Mourning, the Nets GM said several other teams have contacted him, hoping to make a deal.
Thorn, however, is still waiting for a call from Knicks GM Scott Layden, whose roster doesn't include even one natural center. So far, it hasn't happened.
"I haven't had any conversations with them, no," Thorn told The Post Friday night. "But there have been a lot of calls. You always listen. Right now, we're going to stay where we are. If something comes along real good, you look at it - but we haven't heard that."
Try this one for size: A Nets starting-five featuring Mourning at center, Jason Collins or Aaron Williams at power forward, Kenyon Martin at small forward and Richard Jefferson at shooting guard.
Layden, who elected not to make an offer to 7-foot Michael Olowokandi because he wanted to meet with him first, must be crying in his New England clam chowder when he thinks about the dynasty Thorn has assembled.
"It's a good problem to have," Thorn said.
The Nets' early impressions of Croatian first-rounder Zoran Planicic is that he could back up Jason Kidd on a 10-minute-a-night basis.
In yesterday's 82-77 summer-league victory over Philadelphia, Planicic scored 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting, with three assists.
