SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Allan Houston scored 24 points and Kurt Thomas added 23 as the New York Knicks beat the Utah Jazz 89-83 in an NBA exhibition game Tuesday night.
Houston and Thomas, who are expected to carry the injury-decimated Knicks when the regular season begins, combined to shoot 16-of-29 from the field while the rest of the team was just 15-of-46.
Matt Harpring, who scored 10 of Utah's 16 fourth-quarter points, cut the New York lead to 83-81 with 2:14 left, but Othella Harrington and Tim James hit consecutive shots for the Knicks (2-2) to clinch the victory.
Karl Malone had 16 points for Utah but did not play in the fourth quarter. Andrei Kirilenko scored 12 points for the Jazz (1-3), who shot 36 percent.
Thomas scored four points in a 7-0 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters as the Knicks held the Jazz scoreless for more than six minutes and went up 76-67, the game's largest lead.
The Knicks were missing six players due to injury, most notably forward Antonio McDyess, who will have surgery Wednesday on his fractured kneecap, and Latrell Sprewell, who has a broken right hand.
The Jazz were missing Greg Ostertag who is experiencing abdominal pain after donating a kidney to his sister over the summer.
