Hornets 105 - Knicks 97, OT
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Jamaal Magloire's days as a starter may be numbered, but he's making a case to keep his playing time up when Elden Campbell comes back.
Magloire scored 20 points, including a big jump hook late in the fourth quarter as the shot clock expired, and grabbed 11 rebounds as the New Orleans Hornets beat the New York Knicks 105-97 in overtime Friday night.
The strong outing came one game after Magloire had 11 points, a game-high 17 rebounds and seven blocked shots in a victory over Philadelphia.
``It's going to be hard to get him out of there,'' Hornets coach Paul Silas said.
Magloire said having Campbell back will make the Hornets better, but he intends to fight for playing time.
The coaches ``have a hard decision to make because I'm comfortable, I'm happy where I'm at and I'm doing well,'' Magloire said.
Campbell, who has returned to practice after missing training camp and the early season with a sprained knee, is expected back in the next couple of games.
Magloire, with several authoritative dunks, and P.J. Brown, who had 20 points and 10 rebounds, dominated the inside against the Knicks. Jamal Mashburn scored a team-high 25 points on an array of jump shots, inside drives and fast-break layups.
Latrell Sprewell and Allan Houston led New York with 23 points each, but Houston missed all four of his shots in the second half along with his only field-goal attempt in overtime. Houston also spent much of the second half in foul trouble and committed his fifth foul early in the fourth quarter on a charge.
``I just got cold. My rhythm was gone and I was never able to get it back and I didn't do the necessary things to get back into game,'' Houston said. ``When the fifth (foul) was called, I let it frustrate me. I have to get back into the game and be there for the team.''
Sprewell made several big fourth-quarter shots, including a 3-pointer to tie the game at 91 in the final minute, but did not score in overtime and turned the ball over once. Howard Eisley scored 17 with 14 assists and Kurt Thomas had 16 points and 10 rebounds for New York, which has yet to win on the road in four tries.
The Hornets, 8-0 at home, beat the Knicks for the second time in two weeks, with both games going to overtime.
David Wesley scored 13 points and Baron Davis had 12 for New Orleans. Davis also had 10 assists.
New York led for nearly all of the first three quarters, often by double digits, but a 3-pointer from the corner by Courtney Alexander left the score tied at 75 after three periods.
New York kept its lead in double digits from the 5:33 mark of the first quarter until there was 1:39 left in the half, when Davis hit a 3-pointer to make the score 49-41. New Orleans didn't tie the game until Mashburn hit a pairof free throws with 3:55 left in the third quarter to make it 69-69.
